Thursday, August 30, 2001 Size 12 and up? Wear what you want
By Joy Kraft Pamela Macklin, fashion director of Essence magazine, has a message for women size 12 and up. Toss the tunic tops. We have to get away from the myth that you have to wear a tent or a tunic, , says Ms. Macklin, in town Saturday for the Lazarus launch of the new Tommy Hilfiger Woman line. Plus-sizes need to learn how to love your body and not be afraid to experiment, she says. There's almost nothing the smaller girls can wear that the larger girls can't. Ms. Macklin's plus-size tips: Start with a good support system. There are bras, body toners, cinchers and shapers for a smooth look. Don't be afraid of clothes that caress your curves. But that doesn't mean tight clothing. It's about accentuating: pleated trousers, skirts shaped into soft A-lines above or below the knee, even short-waisted jackets. Avoid things that add bulk, such as big sweaters. Sweater jackets are OK, though, because they create a longer line.. Add height. It elongates the body. Boots this year are a terrific way to do this. For comfort and style, try 1 1/2 to 2 1/2-inch heels. If you can go higher comfortably, fine. The ankle boots and shoe boots solve the problem of finding a boot that fits smoothly over the calf. • Don't be afraid of color, but choose wisely. If you have a vibrant color on top choose a neutral on the bottom. A print is acceptable, too, but, again, break it up with a print skirt with a solid top. And black is back. It's a great option. Accessories are a great way to look fabulous without breaking the bank. Handbags are bolder, and a fuller woman can carry a bigger bag. Play around with your neckline. I love opening the neck on a fuller woman. Or close it up with a turtleneck. There are tons of off-the-shoulder tops and dresses. Don't avoid leather. Don't avoid suede. It all translates for the fuller woman.
