What is
the difference between aftershave and eau de toilette?

"Aftershave is designed for use on the face," says Annette
Green, President of The Fragrance Foundation. "Its primary function
is to soothe and refresh rather than deliver lasting fragrance. A cologne,
which is equivalent in strength to a lady's eau de toilette, is longer
lasting and delivers a more concentrated formula that is used on the
body."

How long
should fragrance last in a bottle? Can I keep it in the refrigerator to
make it last longer?

Your fragrance should last six months to a year if kept out of direct
light and closed tightly to avoid oxidation and evaporation, according to
Annette Green of The Fragrance Foundation.
Contrary to popular belief, refrigeration does not extend the life of
fragrance and, in fact, will disrupt the delicate balance of perfume and
eau de parfum, and should be avoided. For the refreshing feel of a chilled
fragrance, you can put aftershave or cologne in the fridge.

I want to
buy my father a bottle of cologne but he says he's allergic to many
fragrances. Is there anything that he can wear?

According to Annette Green, most people tend to be less sensitive to light
green or citrus scents. A good rule of thumb is "the lighter, the
better."
Allergies and sensitivities are so specific to the individual that it
is difficult to be absolutely certain of your choice. The best way to be
confident of your selection is to test the fragrance in question.
Apply the fragrance to the inside of your father's wrist or on the palm
of his hand. Within one hour, after interacting with his chemistry, the
scent will have developed and he can tell you if the fragrance is
acceptable or not.

How long
should a fragrance last on my skin? How can I make it last longer?

According to Annette Green, three hours is a realistic expectation.
Layering with soaps, powders, creams and oils followed by an eau de parfum
or perfume will extend the wear of the product. Also remember that
fragrance fades much quicker in a high altitude or cool climate, but can
be much richer or bolder in a warm, tropical environment.

My friend
sprays fragrance in her hair because she thinks it lasts longer. Is this
OK?

On the contrary! According to Annette Green of The Fragrance Foundation,
the oils on your scalp can intensify and distort a fragrance. In addition,
the alcohol in the fragrance may be drying to your hair.
If your friend wants a longer-lasting scent, tell her to apply perfume
to the pulse points - ankles, behind the ears, back of the knees, bosom,
inside the wrist and inside the elbows - to extend wear.
